Behzad Karim Khani – When We Were Swans
From coal to cool - A region of tradition and innovation
With his debut “Dog, Jackal, Wolf,” he shot to stardom on the German literary scene: “This book is a sensation,” wrote Elke Heidenreich, while Ijoma Mangold declared: “Ten times better than any episode of 4 Blocks”. Katharina Granzin praised its “poetic flair”.
Now, Behzad Karim Khani follows up with his second novel, When We Were Swans. It is the story of a boy growing up in a high-rise in 1990s Bochum, where the kitchens have no ventilation and the hallways smell of poverty. The family has flown as refugees from Iran to Germany. The mother is a sociologist and the father is an author whose language has 15 different words for ‘pride.’ And their son? He’s furious. Because out on the streets of the housing estate, a whole different kind of war rages – and his parents have no idea.
With journalist Shila Behjat, Behzad Karim Khani speaks about his novel, the diaspora as home and the freedom of being a stranger.
