Soccer has always been a driver of transformation and integration. People of any age, coming from anywhere (whether Germany or Türkiye, Gelsenkirchen or Dortmund), boys and girls, women and men – they are all united by a passion for the round leather ball.
Author and cabaret artist Frank Goosen has been a volunteer coach of youth teams for many years and he knows how powerful soccer can be as a tool of integration. His novel “Spiel ab” [“Game On!”] is a warmhearted and funny tale of a recalcitrant youth soccer team from Bochum, an eventful season in the district league and three men who learned more from 11 teenagers than they ever thought possible.
He will be joined by Kyra Malinowski, a former member of the German women’s team (U-15 to U-19) and now a women’s soccer trainer with the club VfL Bochum. Together, they will read and tell stories of unforgettable encounters, soccer heroes and heroines, crazy fans and those moments when soccer brings everyone together.
