Marina Weisband and The New School of Democracy – Wild thoughts, effective agency
From coal to cool – A region of tradition and innovation
We cannot simply wish democracy into existence, it must be learned. Psychologist and journalist Marina Weisband is convinced that democracy education must start at a very early age and our schools are not doing a good job of this. Instead of offering space for creativity and helping young people become independent, schools teach a state of learned helplessness. This is the ideal gateway to extremism and populism. In her new book, The New School of Democracy - Wild thoughts, effective agency, Weisband argues that democracy must be “the basis of everything – in our schools and in our society.” Democracy has to be fought for and lived again and again; it is not a state of nature. Only when we understand this can we empower young people to shape our society as responsible citizens.
